So my kids love tacos, but in an effort to clean up their diets as much I possibly can, I make the taco seasoning from scratch now. Have you seen the ingredients list on the taco seasoning in the store? I can’t even pronounce some of the ingredients, and that’s one of the “rules” of eating clean – if you can’t pronounce words on the ingredients list, don’t eat it. The best part about making my own taco seasoning is my kids love it and it’s so much better for them.
When I make this homemade taco seasoning, I make enough for more than one meal so the next time we have tacos, the seasoning is already prepared. You can use half of this recipe for one meal, and then store the rest in airtight container.
Also, this homemade taco seasoning is a little on the spicy side. You can adjust the recipe to your liking. And this is used just like the taco seasoning packets you can buy in the store, so you’ll need to add water to your meat mixture after adding the seasoning.
Enjoy!

- 2 tsp. black pepper
Directions:
In a small bowl, mix all ingredients together.

Thank you so much I have often glared at the back of the taco seasoning package I quit using them long ago but have mainly relied on cumin and chili powder to flavor my tacos I am so excited to give this a shot!
Sounds great, I LOVE tacos so I am definitely looking forward to trying this!!
One question though….what about the taco shells? Do you just use the packaged ones or do you have a healthier alternative?
Meaghan, There is a brand of all natural shells I used a while ago. They are made out of blue corn, but I can’t remember the name for the life of me! Sometimes I’ll also use all natural tortillas for a soft taco. Now I’m craving tacos! lol
I tried this last night and it was amazing!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing. My 16 year old son who has got to be the pickiest eater on the planet Loved It! While it was cooking youd swear it was the store bought taco seasoning. I also used ground chicken instead of red meat.
This was awesome, Jennifer! It earned a place in my personal recipe book forever. My husband and I began eating clean a few months ago, and I wanted to make a taco salad with ground turkey. I knew the seasoning would contain chili powder and cumin, but wasn’t sure what else to use. Many thanks, you saved the day :-0)
Do you mix all the above ingredients with 1 pound of ground turkey?
Also for Meaghan: You can get Ezekiel brand tortillas (or maybe they’re wraps) for soft tacos.
The taco shells that are as close to clean as you can probably get (if not already clean) are Garden of Eatin blue corn taco shells.
Thank you, Tracy!
Awesome! My whole family loved this. I have just been throwing together cumin, chili powder, etc. and not always getting the proportions right or something since we stopped using packaged seasonings. This was great and perfect.
Hi Maryum, thanks for leaving a comment and I’m happy to hear that your whole family like the seasoning.
