In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, here is a hearty, whole-grain bread recipe that is not only clean, but also tastes great. This Irish Brown Bread is so easy to make, and my son loves to help me make it. You can enjoy it with a little 100% fruit spread as part of your clean breakfast. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1/2 cup wheat germ
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons honey
Directions:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
In a mixing bowl, combine first 6 ingredients. In a seperate small bowl, mix buttermilk & honey and pour into the flour mixture. Mix until combined. Put dough on a floured surface and shape into a circle. Move it to a lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 400 degrees F and bake an additional 15 minutes or until knife comes out clean when inserted into center. Cool for 20 minutes and enjoy!

Definitely going to try…thanks
I am totally amazed: I am a first generation Irish American, and one of the only memories I have of my grandma is the taste of her wheat bread when it came out of her oven in Roscommon, Ireland.
This is the closest thing to that memory I have ever tasted! I nearly cried. Where did you get this recipe?! I am going to make it next time I go home to my parent’s (both from Ireland) and see if they agree this is IT.
Thanks so much–although it is hard not to eat it with huge hunks of Irish butter right out of the oven!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it and it helped bring back such wonderful memories! Thank you very much for sharing this with us. I had clipped the recipe from a magazine and I’m not sure which one it was. I think it was a small publication my grocery store puts out, but not positive. It looked so simple & wholesome I just had to try it. Let us know what your family thinks!
